In 2024 sony photography awards published this photo project by Brent Stirton of LGBTQIA Refugees who were from Uganda and awarded it the 2nd place in the world photography awards competition in the category of documentary photography.

Stay with me Ali Saadat to explain to you how a photographer can bravely depict such a situation in hearing the words of this part of the society, which is often in countries that are still far from democracy and accepting people in their human position. They are effective.

This is where you will understand how effective a collection of photos in the style of documentary photography is.

Brent Stirton in this photo project (you can see a part of it in this analysis. From September 27 to October 2, 2023) from my point of view, it has been so effective for these victims of society’s ignorance that it took them a few years to reach a destination. help properly This is the power of art and the power of photography.

Brent Stirton discussed LGBTQIAs from Uganda in this photo project, forced to flee their homeland due to heavy judicial sentences, now living in safe and fragile houses in Kenya.

Artist Brent Stirton himself says this about his unique photo project:
“I felt compelled to work on this because these laws are a violation of human rights and an attack on democracy: LGBTQIA people have the same contractual rights to love and intimacy.”

Ayan Farah Dahr’s picture depicts loneliness – Brent Stirton amazing art

Ayan Farah Dahr's Escape from Persecution - Brent Stirton - sony photo awards
Ayan Farah Dahr, escaped persecution in Somalia and now seeks resettlement in Nairobi, Kenya.

An 18-year-old trans man, was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. At 15, he fled his home to escape persecution for his gender identity, traveling by bus to the Kenyan border and then walking to Nairobi under the cover of night.

Outside the UNHCR headquarters in Nairobi, he slept, seeking resettlement through the UN’s programs for persecuted LGBTQIA individuals. Back in Somalia, his family had him arrested for dressing like a boy, considering him a bad influence on girls.

While attempting to work in Eastley, Nairobi, shopkeepers assaulted and stripped him to determine his gender, leaving him deeply traumatized.

He now stays in a safe house provided by the Refugee Coalition of East Africa, which supports LGBTQIA youth who have fled their homes. Currently, Ayan is waiting to hear if authorities will resettle him, hopeful to start a new life in America, though the process may take years.

The next two photos show a safe house in Nairobi where LGBTQIAs are on camera in women’s clothing and wigs

Lady Tina and Pretty Peter, trans women escaping Uganda’s anti-LGBT laws, reside discreetly in a Nairobi safe house.

Both Pretty and Tina endured imprisonment for their trans identities and experienced sexual assault while in jail. Lady Tina is awaiting resettlement in Toronto, Canada, while Pretty is still waiting for a decision.

A fellow trans woman betrayed them by reporting them to the Ugandan authorities, which resulted in their arrest and imprisonment. Ironically, the betrayer was Uganda’s first gay person arrested under harsh new anti-LGBT laws, now imprisoned.

Seeking Refuge: Trans Women's Struggle for Safety in Nairobi - Brent Stirton - sony photo awards
In Nairobi, trans women live discreetly, awaiting resettlement after escaping harsh persecution in Uganda.

In my opinion, the next photo is Brent Stirton’s masterpiece in this whole photo projects. The happiness of these two people is thought provoking in terms of concept.

In some countries of the world, you have to deal with it secretly and secretly because of the restrictions of the laws and often very heavy punishments for your gender thinking and your attitude and expression of love and affection.

Brent Stirton impressively captures the subject’s gaze towards the sky and the relaxed posture of the second person.

Trans women Olivia and Pretty find solace at a local hotel swimming pool near their safe house in Nairobi. photo: Brent Stirton

Trans women Olivia and Pretty relax at a hotel pool near their safe house, expressing themselves freely when unobserved.

Olivia, who is ill, lives in a refugee camp, while Pretty nurtures their relationship, risking negative attention in Kenya.

Despite having refugee status, their perceived homosexuality could lead to arrest and extortion. Olivia fled Uganda’s harsh anti-LGBT laws and spent three years in the vulnerable Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.

She is in Nairobi visiting Pretty, a makeup artist and fellow refugee, due to treatment unavailability in Kakuma. Pretty has been waiting five years for resettlement status from UN agencies.

Brent Stirton captures two people preparing for church and the club, blending their emotions beautifully.

Olivia and Pretty, trans women escaping Uganda’s anti-LGBT laws, are pictured in Pretty’s safe house bedroom in Nairobi. In the photo, they are using a hair remover before applying makeup. They meticulously prepare for their outings, as they plan to attend church and later visit a nightclub in Nairobi.

The photo shows LGBTQIAs using the club’s back door to avoid attention and Uganda’s anti-LGBT laws.

Cyara, Pretty, and Olivia are trans women who escaped Uganda’s severe anti-LGBT laws. They were photographed entering Nairobi’s K1 Club through the back entrance to avoid attracting unwanted attention. They meticulously prepare for their outings, ensuring they are not seen publicly until they reach a secure location.

Fellowship moments captured at the Cosmopolitan Affirming Church, located at a secret spot in Nairobi. To ensure the safety of the congregants, their identities are concealed in this image. Kenya has become a refuge for LGBT individuals escaping violence from Uganda and other African countries.

The photo shows one of the LGBTQIAs taking blood from two of her/his friends in the hospital

Cyara and Olivia, using pseudonyms, escaped Uganda’s oppressive LGBT laws and are now refugees in Kenya, awaiting asylum.

They were seen at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nairobi, donating blood to a friend in need of a transfusion. Both women endured severe violence and discrimination; consequently, they hope to resettle in a more LGBT-accepting country.
