Carlos Gamez de Francisco
Knowledge Destroys Fear (Series)
DESCRIPTION
In my artistic exploration, I delve into the complex and subjective concept of power, challenging the traditional role of portraiture in society’s historical narrative. Throughout history, portraits have often served as a means for the bourgeoisie to showcase their wealth and status through lavish adornments and attire. However, my aim in this series is to dismantle the conventional representation of power and opulence.
These photographs aim to capture the essence of ordinary individuals in Cuba. The models, seemingly adorned in extravagant costumes, actually utilize everyday objects found within their homes, such as curtains, tablecloths, bedspreads, plastic bags, clothespins, and stainless steel scouring pads. Through irony, the images reimagine the notion of power by employing repurposed objects to portray marginalized communities—individuals facing poverty, those with special needs, and individuals of diverse genders and races.
This series confronts the ambiguity surrounding the concept of power and its true holders. It sheds light on critical issues that often go unaddressed, offering a reinterpretation of power and instilling hope. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit—the hope to exist, to thrive, and to leave a lasting legacy.
